Tequesta

The Tekesta Indians were the original inhabitants of what is now known as the Village of Tequesta in Palm Beach County. They were discovered by Ponce de Leon in 1513 as he made his way along Florida’s east coast. Eventually taken over by the Seminole tribe, disease and slavery, the Tekesta Indians all but disappeared, leaving behind a beautiful but harsh tropical paradise.

Eventually, as with many Florida towns, the completion of the East Coast railroad allowed people to relocate further north from more developed areas and to construct schools, houses of worship, businesses, and eventually entertainment facilities as Tequesta was becoming a popular tourist destination.

Tequesta is ideally situated between Jonathan Dickinson State Park and the town of Jupiter. With a population of about 6,000, much of Tequesta is located along the Intracoastal Waterway and the Loxahatchee River, making for excellent boating and fishing, as well as multiple other watersports. Home to several professional golfers as well as retired athletes, young and old are drawn to the quiet, low key and laidback atmosphere. Marinas, shopping, golf, churches, and galleries offer activities for everyone.
